”The Marriage of Figaro” (Die Hochzeit des Figaro) is an opera buffa from 1786 written by Mozart. It was a great success from day one and is today acknowledged as one of the world’s best comic operas.
The story is based on the play “La folle journeé, ou le Mariage de Figaro” by Pierre Beaumarchais from 1784, which was censored and banned in Austria. Beaumarchais, who (among other jobs) was a music teacher at the French royal court, had already involved himself politically from Europa in the American Revolution and only years later, he would involve himself in the French Revolution.
An opera version of this work was granted permission and Mozart’s music was premiered on May 1st 1786 in Vienna. The first transcription of the whole opera for winds is from 1791, when Johann Nepomuk Wendt arranges it for the imperial Harmonie Musik (of which he was himself a member). Many other operas from the time were also arranged and Carion have followed up on this tradition with their own arrangement of two pieces from “The Marriage of Figaro”.
Those pieces are ”Will der Herr Graf ein Tänzchen nun wagen” (Se vuol ballare, signor contino) from act one and ”Euch, holde Frauen” (Voi che sapete) fom act two.
