Mozart’s wonderful and mysterious music to his opera “The Magic Flute” (Die Zauberflöte) is well-known the world over. The story, often connected with Freemasonry, was to become Mozart’s last opera, composed in 1791.

The music is typically Mozartian: simple, elegant and witty. Carion has chosen three pieces from the opera that has been arranged for wind quintet by their horn player, David M.A.P. Palmquist. The tradition of arranging music for wind ensembles goes back to Mozart’s own time, where the big wind ensembles, the Harmonie Musik, was to be found at every court in Europe. Many of Mozart’s operas were thus transcribed already in his own time. He wrote several original pieces for wind ensemble himself, but did not write these transcriptions of his operas.

Carion has followed this tradition and chosen three popular pieces from the opera, that will fit any program. Either as a little suite, as single pieces or as an encore.

The three pieces are “Pa-pa-pa”, “Marsch der Priester” and “Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja”. For a special scenic performance a la the opera, the piccolo flute player can be “hidden” backstage for the “Vogelfänger”.
